Chapter Twenty-One
Elly
âSorry,â he muttered just as they got settled on her couch.
âWhy?â she asked as he shifted to one side and reached into his pocket.
âPhoneâs going off,â he said. âThatâs rude.â
He took out his cell, glanced at the caller ID, and then with a snort, hit the button to silence the incoming call.
âShouldnât you take that?â she asked. âI donât mind.â
âI have my priorities straight,â he said, giving her a reassuring wink. âThey can wait. Itâs not an emergency, even if they want to pretend it is.â
Elly gave him a questioning glance, but he refrained from saying any more, so she let it go with a shrug. After all, it was heartwarming to know that she was his priority.
âIf you say so.â
âI do,â he rumbled. âI want to hear whatâs bothering you. I can tell it wonât be easy for you to talk about, hence wanting to come back here. The least I can do is give you my full, undivided attention if youâre willing to let me in.â
âHandsome and smart,â she murmured, unable to stop herself from smiling, even if it was a tense, fragile thing. âWhat a combo.â
âI wouldnât expect it all the time,â he said with a chuckle. âBut I have my moments.â
Elly smiled and snuggled in closer, taking solace in his strength, the safe feeling that embraced her as he draped an arm over her shoulder, muscles squeezing her tightly.
âNow, what is it about all this stuff thatâs really bothering you?â Dres asked, gently prodding. âBecause I donât think itâs all about your mother, is it?â
She shook her head. âNot entirely. I mean, Iâm sure she would be less than enthused if my dad got married. I think everyone would freak if sheâs pregnant, but Momâs reaction would be no different than the rest of us, I think.â
âSo, what is it then?â he said, pushing her. âWhy would you be so upset if he got married to this woman?â
âBesides the fact that sheâs a psycho?â
Dres smiled. âYes,â he said, nodding slowly. âBesides that. I can see it in your eyes, in the corners of them. Itâs eating at you. What is it?â
Could he really read her that well? She shivered. Dresdin pulled her in tighter. She felt safe around him. Protected.
âIt was my fault,â she said in a tiny voice.
Dresdin was quiet at first, probably waiting for her to go on. When she didnât, his chest vibrated under her head as he spoke.
âWhat do you think was your fault?â he asked, phrasing it ever so slightly different.
âIt was my fault,â she said more forcefully. âI was the one who said it. Who caused it. Nobody else but me.â
Again, Dres was quiet. âThe divorce,â he said at last. âYou think it was your fault.â
âI know it was,â she said, blinking back hot tears. âIâm the one who picked up the phone when my dad was on it. Iâm the one who asked him in front of my mom who the woman he was talking to was. I caused it.
